To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of science postgraduates who successfully complete their doctorates within British universities have found employment in the United Kingdom within(a) six months and (b) one year for each of the last five years.

The percentage of those gaining science doctorates in 1991 who were in employment at the end of that year was as follows:

Biology 76
Physical Sciences 63
Mathematical Sciences 74
Engineering and Technology 78

These statistics are based on a special analysis of the annual "First Destinations Survey of Graduates" carried out by the universities.
