To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what proposals he has for commissioning research into the positive relationship between winter waterlogging of soils and higher levels of infant mortality.

My Department has no plans to commission such research.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on land drainage policy in relation to the effect of winter waterlogging on the level of infant mortality.

Land drainage policy is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
