To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will investigate whether the crew of the Bowbelle had been made aware of the availability of walkie talkies on the night of the Marchioness disaster.

The matter was investigated during the marine accident investigation branch inquiry. The master was aware of the presence of hand-held VHF sets on board Bowbelle; sections 8.9 and 17.1 of the chief inspector's report refer. At least one of the seamen on the fo'c'sle was aware that sets were carried.
