HC Deb 17 January 1994 vol 235 c418W
Mr. Dowd

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many miles of the 1,000-mile cycle network in London have now been completed; and what action his Department has taken to speed up its completion.

Mr. Norris

Responsibility for the provision of the 1,000 mile network in London rests primarily with the 33 London boroughs. Cycle schemes on local authority routes are eligible for Government funding support. Approximately a third of the network is in existence or in preparation. We have agreed to provide, where practicable, all the routes that have been proposed for trunk roads as well as cycle crossing points of the trunk road network. We continue to encourage local authorities to provide cycle facilities.
