HC Deb 14 January 1994 vol 235 c297W
Sir Ralph Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many single-parent families there were to which the father made no contribution before the establishment of the Child Support Agency; and how many of such families there were at the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Burt

In 1991 there were 1.27 million1 lone parents in the United Kingdom. Research conducted at the time indicated that just over 70 per cent. or about 900,000 of these families received no regular maintenance. These are the latest figures available. 1OPCS provisional estimate based on 1991 census data.
