Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what information he has concerning the cost per listener hour of the output of each of the British Broadcasting Corporation's national radio stations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

I understand from the BBC that the cost per listener hour for each BBC network radio station, in 1992–93, was as follows:

pence
Radio 1 0.37
Radio 2 0.81
Radio 3 7.26
Radio 4 1.51
Radio 5 4.81

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what information he has concerning the total number of listeners attracted per week by each of the national radio stations operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Mr. Brooke

I understand from the BBC that, for the period 21 June to 19 September 1993, the estimated weekly audience reach for each BBC network radio station was as follows:

million
Radio 1 16
Radio 2 9
Radio 3 3
Radio 4 8

Note: The audience reach figures for each station are based on the total number of listeners tuning in for at least 15 minutes per week.
