HL Deb 10 January 1994 vol 551 cc7-8WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they know if the Southampton University NHS Trust intend to make available the results of their inquiry into the death of Mr. John Gibson (who died following the refusal of medical treatment within the NHS) to his widow; and, if not, why not.

Baroness Cumberlege

Mr. Gibson was at no stage refused treatment by the Southampton University National Health Service Trust. Having asked for his name to be removed from the Southampton Hospital's waiting list for surgery in July 1993, he was not a patient of Southampton Hospital at the time of his death. The hospital did not therefore carry out an enquiry into his death. The Medical Director at the trust did however review the hospital's handling of the case and is satisfied that the consultant acted correctly throughout. It is for the trust to decide what, if any, information should be released, and to whom.
