To ask the President of the Board of Trade what British standards awards have been established for product development; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

The British Standards Institution has published a guide—BS 7000 part 1—to managing product design which offers guidance on product development. However, there are no specific British standards setting out detailed specifications against which companies' product development expertise can be measured or against which certificates may be awarded.
