HC Deb 22 February 1994 vol 238 cc139-40W
Sir Thomas Arnold

To ask me Secretary of State for Education how he defines open enrolment in primary schools.

Mr. Robin Squire

All parents have the right to state a preference for their choice of primay school. The more open enrolment provisions of the Education Reform Act 1988 mean that schools must admit pupils on demand until they are full. Each primary school has a standard number for admissions, or an approved admission number in the case of grant-maintained schools, which reflects the school's previous levels of intake or its physical capacity as measured against a prescribed formula.
