HC Deb 15 February 1994 vol 237 cc706-7W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has for marking the 50th anniversary of the United Nations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Plans for marking the 50th anniversary of the United Nations are still in their early stages. Under the auspices of the United Nations Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, a national committee has been set up to co-ordinate the national programme of events. The president is the right hon. the Lord Howe of Aberavon, QC. Commemorative events are envisaged on the three key dates: 26 June 1995—the anniversary of the signing of the United Nations charter—24 October 1995—the anniversary of the Charter coming into force—and 10 January 1996, the anniversary of the first session of the General Assembly.
