HL Deb 15 February 1994 vol 552 c13WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps are being taken by the Group of Seven, and to their knowledge by others (including the Swiss Government), to control and discourage the "flight of capital" from South Africa.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The control of capital flows from South Africa is a matter for the South African authorities, who maintain exchange controls intended to limit capital flight.

To discourage the flight of capital South Africa will need to maintain political and economic stability to allow investment to prosper. We are, with other governments and the international financial institutions, supporting this process.
