asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many incidents involving climbers and hill walkers requiring the assistance of rescue services have taken place since 1st October 1993; in how many cases have persons died as a result of any such incidents; what costs have been incurred to date for the use and time of civil and service personnel and resources, including helicopters and ambulance services, in rescue operations; what are the comparative figures for England and Wales for the same period in similar activities; and how many same period in similar activities; and how many deaths have occured on hills and mountains in England and Wales since I October 1993.

Scottish rescue services have responded to 79 incidents involving climbers and hill walkers since 1 October 1993; 21 persons have died as a result of these incidents. In England and Wales there have been 172 incidents and 17 deaths during the same period. Information relating to costs incurred by the relevant agencies is not readily available and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
