Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list those hospitals and medical research facilities undertaking research of AIDS; and if she will list the amount of central Government grant each attracts.

Mr. Sackville

The main agency through which the Government support research into HIV and AIDS is the Medical Research Council which receives its grant in aid from the office of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

In the current financial year it is estimated that the Government will fund research on HIV/AIDS to a value of £26,209,000.

The annual report of the MRC and "The Health and Social Care of People with HIV Infection and AIDS", which list the hospitals and medical research facilities currently undertaking AIDS/HIV research for the Department and for the MRC, are available in the Library.
