HL Deb 10 February 1994 vol 551 c63WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in the light of their Written Answer to Lord Stoddart of Swindon [H.L. Deb., 10.1.94, col. WA71] showing that only 30 per cent. of those who die from so-called smoking related diseases smoke tobacco (a proportion in line with the number of smokers in the population) they will commission new research into the causes of these diseases including the effects of air pollution.

Baroness Cumberlege

Extensive research on those diseases for which smoking is a risk factor, including coronary heart disease, stroke and lung cancer, continues in a number of academic and research institutions in the United Kingdom. The need for further research on the health effects of air pollution is currently being considered.
