To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the prospects of the pharmaceutical industry.

The pharmaceutical industry has a long record of success in the United Kingdom. The industry employs about 80,000 people in the United Kingdom and has a positive balance of trade—estimated at about £1.5 billion for 1993, the second largest contribution to the United Kingdom balance of trade. We expect the industry to continue to be successful in the years to come.
