To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what criteria his Department uses in deciding whether to write off a particular grant.

In accordance with the criteria set out in "Government Accounting", a grant is written off by my Department only after a most careful appraisal of the facts, if there is no feasible alternative and once all reasonable action has been taken to effect recovery.
