To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many planning applications for food superstores have been granted on appeal, for the last two years for which figures are available.

The provision of information on planning appeals is the responsibility of the Planning Inspectorate. I have asked the inspectorate 's chief executive, Mr. Stephen Crow, to write to the hon. Member.

The information is taken from the Inspectorate's records. The latest figures available for England are for the financial years that ended on 31 March 1992 and 1993 and are set out below:
