To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the total number of recipients of mortgage interest tax relief is expected to be in 1993–94, 1994–95 and 1995–96; and if he will make a statement of the effects on them of the reductions in the rate of relief announced in the March and November 1993 Budgets.

[holding answer 26 January 1994]: Working assumptions based on recent trends are shown in the table. Also shown as the average reduction in the relief as well as the saving on an average mortgage as a result of interest rate reductions since October 1990.
