Mr. Hanley

Details of NATO countries' defence expenditure in 1992 both in total, and as a proportion of gross domestic product, are contained in the 1993 Statement on the Defence Estimates (Cm 2270). Comparable information based on estimates published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies for Japan, Switzerland, Finland and the Republic of Ireland is set out in the table.

Budget Per cent. of GDP
Japan 35,900,000,000 1.0
Switzerland 3,700,000,000 1.5
Finland 2,080,000,000 1.9
Republic of Ireland 560,000,000 1.2

For consistency with data in the SDE, non-NATO defence expenditures are shown in US Dollars.
