Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is her estimate of the cost of implementing the regional health authority changes proposed from 1 April 1994.

Dr. Mawhinney

The proposals announced in my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State's statement on "Managing the New NHS" on 21 October 1993 will streamline national health service central management. It is not possible to estimate the cost of implementing the propoals at this stage. However, the changes will result in substantial savings which will be reinvested in patient care.
