HC Deb 01 February 1994 vol 236 c595W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department how many employees were judged to be guilty of fraud in his Department in each year since 1989; and how many were dismissed.

Mr. John M. Taylor

In 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993 the number of employees convicted of fraud was, respectively, two, one, none, three and three. Of these, six were dismissed by the Department, and three resigned before any internal disciplinary proceedings were taken.

Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what is his Department's policy for dealing with employees found guilty of fraud.

Mr. John M. Taylor

Employees of the Lord Chancellor's Department who are convicted of fraud will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings. Although each case will be treated on its own merits, serious fraud is regarded as gross misconduct, and will usually lead to dismissal at the conclusion of the internal disciplinary proceedings.
