HC Deb 20 December 1994 vol 251 cc1043-4W
Mr. Garrett

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans he has to ensure that smoke detectors exceeding the legal limit for the unapproved disposal of radioactive material are returned to the manufacturer.

Mr. Ian Taylor

My Department has no present plans to control the disposal of smoke detectors. Disposal of radioactive material is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment and of Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution, who have the necessary regulatory powers under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993.

Mr. Garrett

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many smoke detectors of the ionising type have been imported in each of the last five years; and from which countries.

Mr. Ian Taylor

The information requested is not available since the product in question is not an identifiable commodity within the standard international trade classification.
