Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many(a) home helps and (b) district nurses per 1,000 people over the age of 65 years there are in the United Kingdom; and if she will publish comparative data for other European countries;

(2) how many (a) home helps (b) district nurses per 1,000 people over the age of 65 there are; and what are the equivalent figures for other European countries.

For England, the latest available information is for 30 September 1993 and is shown in the table:

Number per 1,000 people aged 65 or over

1 Whole-time equivalent numbers of home helps directly employed by social services departments.

The home help figures are derived from the annual Department of Health census of local authority social services staff.

The district nurses figures are derived from the Department's non-medical work force census.

The Population data used are the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys mid-year 1993 England figures.

Information relating to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Wales and for Scotland and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland respectively. The Department does not hold comparable information about other European countries.
