To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many eye tests were carried out in(a) Lothian and (b) Scotland as a whole in each of the last seven years for which figures are available.

[holding answer 19 December 1994]: The number of national health service sight tests paid for by health boards in each of the financial years since 1987 is shown in the table. No information is collected on private sight tests.

A copy of the Local Government (Compensation for Premature Retirement) (Scotland) Regulations 1979 and subsequent amending instruments are already in the Library. A copy of the Local Government (Compensation for Redundancy) (Scotland) Regulations 1994 and a draft of the Government's proposals for compensation for loss of employment arising from local government reorganisation were lodged with the Library on 5 December. The proposals, in the form of a draft of the Local Government (Compensation for Redundancy) (Scotland) Regulations 1995, have been issued for comment.
