To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of those convicted of driving without insurance received fines of greater than(a) £1,000 and (b) £5,000 in 1993.

Information available to me indicates that 6,538 convictions for driving without insurance in1993 in England and Wales resulted in fines of over £1,000 being imposed, none of which was over £5,000.
