To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the Government's policy with regard to the disposal of sewage through long sea outfall pipes.

Mr. Atkins

[holding answer 14 December 1994]: Government policy is that all significant discharges of sewage into coastal and estuarial waters should be treated. This will be achieved through implementation of the EC urban waste water treatment directive.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the location and date of commissioning for long sea outfall pipes for sewage which are(a) proposed, (b) already commissioned and (c) under construction.

[holding answer 14 December 1994]: Comprehensive information on the numbers and locations of existing or proposed long sea outfall pipes is not kept by my Department.
