To ask the Secretary of State for Education how much has been spent on telephone charges; and how many telephone calls have been made by her Department in each of the last five years.

Departmental charges for telephony for years 1990–1994 were:

  • 1990–91: £539,000
  • 1991–92: £846,000
  • 1992–93: £863,000
  • 1993–94: £938,000

Figures are not available centrally for 1989–90 or for the number of telephone calls made in each year.

The sums include installation, rental and maintenance costs, as well as call charges, for the use of telecommunication links. Call charges currently amount to £350,000 a year.
