To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much has been spent on telephone charges; and how many telephone calls have been made by her Department in each of the last five years.

Mr. Sackville

Telephone charges incurred by the Department of Health over the past four years are:

  • 1990–91: £4,739,561
  • 1991–92: £3,017,000
  • 1992–93: £3,490,000
  • 1993–94: £3,419,000

Separate figures for the Department of Health are not available prior to 1990–91 since such costs were incurred by the combined Departments of Health and Social Security. Details of the number of calls made per year are not available centrally.
