To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how much has been spent on telephone charges and how many telephone calls have been made by his Department for each of the last five years.

Departmental telephony charges for years 1989–94 are:

  • 1989–90: £29,738,061.83
  • 1990–91: £36,195,446.12
  • 1991–92: £36,762,993.82
  • 1992–93: £52,665,961.71
  • 1993–94: £61,699,223.12

Details of the number of calls made per year are not held.
