§ Sir Patrick MayhewThe Government's response to the commission's report was published in July 1993. The Government continue to consider carefully all proposals for legislation for Northern Ireland so as to choose the most appropriate legislative route and allow sufficient time for consultation. It remains the Government's policy to promote the return of responsibility, including responsibility for legislation, to a locally accountable body which would command widespread support in the community and take account of the wider relationships.
