The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of inmates in each Prison Service establishment who have been diagnosed as requiring psychiatric treatment in a hospital environment.The most up to date information held centrally on mentally disordered offenders is for 21 September 1994. On that day there were 102 mentally disordered prisoners awaiting transfer to NHS psychiatric facilities of all types. The attached table lists by establishment the prisons in which these prisoners were held and expresses the figure for each individual establishment as a percentage of that prison's daily average population during the week beginning 4 September.
