To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the total population of Great Britain aged 75 years and over; and how many of these are women.

Mr. Sackville

The latest available population estimates relate to mid–1993. It is estimated that there were 3.92 million residents in Great Britain aged 75 and over at that date. This figure comprises 2.59 million women and 1.33 million men.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the average life expectancy for(a) males and (b) females in (i) 1978–79 and (ii) the latest year for which figures are available.
