HC Deb 07 December 1994 vol 251 c249W
Mr. John Morris

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what new industries from overseas were sited in England, Wales and Scotland, respectively, in each year between and including 1971 to 1980; and what major expansions or new plants of existing industries were set up or announced during the same years.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The total number of projects in England, Scotland, and Wales respectively in 1979 were 119, 28 and 18. Similarly, the number of projects in 1980 were 88, 31 and 16 respectively. These figures are based on information provided to the Department's invest in Britain bureau by companies themselves at the time of their decision to invest. Foreign investors are under no obligation to inform the IBB of their investment decisions.

No records exist for years before 1979 and a more detailed breakdown of the figures for 1979 and 1980 could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
