To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether British citizens of the European Union must necessarily carry a passport when travelling from the United Kingdom to another member state of the EU.

Yes, if the British citizen wishes to be assured of entry to another member state. Community law requires member states to allow citizens of the Union to enter their territory simply on production of a valid identity card or passport.
