Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many benefit recipients were involved in the recovery of £595,000 from damages in respect of attendance allowance in 1993–94, what was the average amount recovered per claimant, what were the legal costs to the Department of Social Security, and whether the stated sum of £595,000 recovered is gross or net of legal costs.

Lord Mackay of Ardbrecknish

The total amount of attendance allowance recovered during the financial year 1993–94 was £580,000 from 336 claimants. This gave an average recovery of £1,726 from each claimant.

There were no legal costs incurred by the compensation recovery unit in the recovery of this benefit.
