§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list(a) the Ministry of Defence establishments at which tests are carried out using animals and (b) the total number of tests at each establishment over the last five years.
§ Mr. SoamesExperiments using animals were carried out in the period 1989–1993 at the Chemical and Biological Defence Establishment, the Defence Research Agency at Alverstoke and the Institute of Aviation Medicine, now the Centre for Human Sciences.
Experiments are carried out only when it is judged essential, and fully meet both the spirit and letter of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. The locations are registered places under that Act with relevant staff being licensed by the Home Office and subject at all times to Home Office inspection. The total number of experiments for the past five years is as follows:
