HC Deb 28 April 1994 vol 242 cc289-90W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many cases have been taken to the European Court under article 119 of the EEC treaty on equal pay since its acceptance; if he will make a statement on the trends; and what proposals Her Majesty's Government will bring forward based upon those trends.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

We are aware of 46 cases which have been taken to the European Court of Justice under article 119 of the EEC treaty since it came into effect in 1957.

The decisions reflect developing jurisprudence in the field of equal pay between men and women for equal work. They do not reveal any discernible trend.
