HL Deb 28 April 1994 vol 554 c51WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to their answer of 28 March (H.L. Deb., col. WA 39), what benefits to the United Kingdom will flow from the extension of copyright protection from 50 to 70 years after the death of an author.

The Minister of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Strathclyde)

The successors in title of United Kingdom authors such as writers, composers and artists will as a result of Directive 93/98/EEC have an increased length of time in which to benefit from the commercial exploitation of their works in the United Kingdom and in other member states of the Community. Moreover, other provisions of the directive will benefit United Kingdom record producers and performing artists.
