HL Deb 27 April 1994 vol 554 cc41-2WA
Viscount Mersey

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are advising those women who wish to have children first to join the Armed Services for reasons of financial gain.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

The Armed Forces offer a worthwhile career to women, whether or not they wish to have children. Since August 1990, Servicewomen who become pregnant have been able to choose either to leave the Service or take maternity leave and return to work. Those who leave can apply to re-enter the Services at a later date.
