HC Deb 21 April 1994 vol 241 c653W
Mr. McMaster

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the procedure for making application to elevate the town of Paisley to city status; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

City status in Scotland can be achieved only through the granting of a royal charter. No royal burgh charter has been granted in modern times and there are no plans to revive the practice.
