HC Deb 21 April 1994 vol 241 c672W
Ms Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the expenditure by each individual first and second-wave trust in 1991–92 and 1992–93, as appropriate on external contract staffing and consulting services.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 28 March 1994]: The information requested is shown in tables which will be placed in the Library. Figures for 1992–93 are provisional and have not yet been validated and are therefore not wholly reliable.

The figures are not comparable with those for earlier years but confirm the effectiveness of the Government's policy of encouraging overall value for money in the national health service by using alternative sources to supply a range of services. The expenditure by trusts in many cases relates to services provided within the NHS either by other trusts or health authorities. These services range from linen supplies and transport to computing services; it also covers payments to other hospitals for services performed by their consultants and senior registrars.
