HC Deb 21 April 1994 vol 241 c639W
22. Mr. Fabricant

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to seek a change in the law to increase custodial sentences for criminals convicted of selling drugs to young people in the proximity of schools.

Mr. Maclean

The maximum sentence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 for those convicted of supplying controlled drugs in class A—for example, heroin and ecstasy—class B—for example, cannabis and amphetamines—and class C—for example, the benzodiazepine tranquillisers—are life imprisonment, 14 years and five years respectively. The Government have no plans to increase those penalties.
