Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what steps she is taking to improve the quality of procedures for the identification and treatment of breast cancer; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Sackville

The chief medical officer's expert advisory group on cancer is currently preparing advice for health authorities on the organisation of cancer services. These recommendations will be put to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State later this year.

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will establish a target of reducing levels of death from breast cancer to the OECD average.

Mr. Sackville

Reducing deaths from breast cancer among women invited for screening by at least 25 per cent. from 1990 by the year 2000 is a target in the Government's "The Health of the Nation" initiative.
