HL Deb 12 April 1994 vol 553 c91WA
The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty"s Government:

Whether staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) at CDE Nancekuke were responsible to MAFF; they reported to MAFF; and their research and personnel costs were paid by MAFF.

The Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne

As a result of a fire at the Ministry"s Animal Health Office in Redruth, Cornwall, staff of the Animal Health Office were moved to accommodation at Nancekuke Laboratory at RAF Portreath in 1982. The Animal Health Office staff were employed by, were responsible to, and reported to MAFF. These staff were of veterinary, technical and clerical grades. They carried out the work of a typical Animal Health Office of the State Veterinary Service, mainly dealing with the control and eradication of notifiable diseases; national disease control programmes, enforcement of farm animal welfare legislation; monitoring of animal welfare at slaughter and of meat hygiene; and some aspects of the control of the import and export of animals and animal products. Their duties did not involve carrying out any research.
