To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many farmers were in receipt of hill livestock compensatory allowances in the severely disadvantaged areas according to the most recent figures for each year since 1978.

The number of farmers in receipt of hill and livestock compensatory allowances in the severely disadvantaged areas in each year since 1978 is set out in the table.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many producers are entitled to hill livestock compensatory allowances; and what proportion of those are located in(a) severely disadvantaged areas arid (b) disadvantaged areas.

Based on the 1992 HLCA scheme, the latest complete scheme for which figures are available, of 17,893 claims received 17,260 were from producers located in severely disadvantaged areas and 633 from producers located in disadvantaged areas.
