HC Deb 29 October 1993 vol 230 c812W
Mr. Parry

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the recent situation in Angola.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

Following United Nations Security Council resolution 864 and the introduction of limited sanctions against UNITA the movement has declared a unilateral ceasefire and agreed to return to negotiations based on the 1991 Bicesse peace accords. "Proximity talks" involving the Government of Angola and UNITA, chaired by the United Nations Secretary General's special representative, Mr. Beye, began in Lusaka on 25 October. We hope that these will result in direct talks. We shall continue actively to support the Secretary General's efforts to bring about a nationwide ceasefire and a negotiated settlement.
