HL Deb 28 October 1993 vol 549 c97WA
Baroness Platt of Writtle

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How Ministers with livings at their disposal will appoint parish priests should the Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure receive Royal Assent.

The Lord Chancellor (Lord Mackay of Clashfern)

The Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure allows Parochial Church Councils to resolve that they will not accept a woman as an incumbent or priest-in-charge of the benefice. In exercising the Lord Chancellor's rights of patronage I would wish to respect the wishes of individual parishes. I would not wish to impose a women priest on a reluctant parish.
