Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the costs of education in Northern Ireland for EC students met by(a) his Department and (b) each education and library board; and what are the numbers of such students from each EC country and in each level of institute of education.

Mr. Ancram

The following table shows the numbers and estimated costs of fees—only awards held by EC students at Northern Ireland institutions during the 1992–93 academic year.

Number of students £000
Department of Education 24 53
Education and Library Boards
North-Eastern 1,330 3,126
Belfast 495 1,163
Western 101 237
Southern 3 7
South-Eastern

Information is not available on the numbers of students from each EC country. However, 1,852 of the students are ordinarily resident in the Republic of Ireland and the balance—101—come from elsewhere in the EC.
