To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations he has had regarding the proposed local government boundaries published in his White Paper.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many letters he has received from the general public about his proposals for the reform of local government.

Mr. Lang

Since the publication of the White Paper, "Shaping the Future—The New Councils" in July, about 1,300 individual letters commenting on the reorganisation proposals have been received. In addition, about 25,000 post cards, pro forma letters and petition signatures have been submitted.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking to improve the quality of local government in Scotland.

Mr. Lang

The creation of single-tier local government, changes to the internal management arrangements of authorities, the extension of compulsory competitive tendering and a range of other Government intiatives are all expected to improve the quality of local government in Scotland.
