To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the minimum distance from a public footpath or other publicly accessible place permitted by regulations for the storage of depleted uranium swarf at his Department's establishments.

All storage of radioactive material by my Department is in accordance with the statutory requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985 and the associated approved codes of practice issued by the Health and Safety Commission. The numbers of women dismissed from the services on the ground of pregnancy since April 1973, the earliest date for which the information is available, are as follows. The numbers of female officers leaving on pregnancy can be provided only at disproportionate cost. The figures given are estimates based on the percentage of non-commissioned females leaving each year due to pregnancy:
